A trial has commenced for Duane (Keffe D) Davis, a former gang member, accused of involvement in the unsolved murder of Tupac Shakur, a prominent hip-hop artist, nearly three decades ago. Davis, aged 63, has been in custody since 2023 and faces a murder charge related to Shakur’s death in 1996. The trial is being held in Las Vegas, the location of the shooting, and is anticipated to last about a month, starting with the jury selection process.
During the trial, prosecutors will not focus on proving that Davis was the one who carried out the shooting but rather aim to establish his role as the “shot caller” of the group responsible for targeting Shakur in the 1996 incident. While seated next to his attorney, Davis, dressed in a blue shirt and tie, remained silent during the initial jury selection proceedings led by Nevada Judge Carli Kierny, where potential jurors were questioned about various matters.
Shakur’s cousin, William Leslane, expressed mixed feelings about the trial, suggesting that while it might bring some level of accountability, true justice has been elusive for years. Leslane emphasized the need for a thorough investigation at the time of Shakur’s murder to ensure justice prevailed, lamenting the delayed legal proceedings.
A significant portion of the trial evidence is expected to come from a book co-authored by Davis, titled “Compton Street Legend,” where he detailed his alleged involvement in the shooting incident. Shakur, a rising star in the rap scene known for hits like “Dear Mama” and “California Love,” had a strong connection to West Coast hip-hop and released several successful albums before his untimely death at 25.
The night of Shakur’s shooting, he was with Marion (Suge) Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, watching a boxing match in Las Vegas. Following the event, they were ambushed in their vehicle, resulting in Shakur being fatally shot. The murder sparked widespread speculation and conspiracy theories, fueled by the rivalry between East and West Coast rappers, including the subsequent killing of Notorious B.I.G., Shakur’s rival.
In his book, Davis attributed the shooting to a revenge motive, citing an altercation involving his nephew earlier that evening. He recounted the events leading up to the shooting, detailing how they located Shakur’s vehicle and the subsequent fatal encounter. Key pieces of evidence, including Davis’s book and related interviews, are expected to play a crucial role in the trial proceedings.
