Artificial intelligence has ventured into the realm of television by introducing its own channel on the widely-used streaming platform, the Roku Channel.
The addition of Fairground AI Creator TV, which offers 24/7 AI-generated content for free, was not officially announced by Roku. Cord Cutters News was the first to reveal its presence in Roku’s channel lineup.
However, the debut of this AI channel has sparked criticism online, with some viewers expressing a lack of interest in the continuous stream of AI-generated content. Critics like Frank Landymore of Futurism and Bradly Shankar of MobileSyrup have voiced their concerns about the channel’s quality and necessity in an already saturated streaming market.
Fairground AI operates as a FAST channel, providing free, ad-supported streaming television. While there are approximately 200 FAST channels available on the Roku Channel in Canada, Fairground AI is not currently among them. The company has not disclosed any plans to extend the channel to Canada.
Roku, a leading player in the streaming industry, was recently acquired by Fox in a deal worth $22 billion US. This move comes at a time when AI-generated content is gaining momentum across various platforms, with initiatives like AI-generated movies at Tribeca Festival and AI-powered versions of popular characters by Hasbro.
Fairground AI’s CEO, Colin Petrie-Norris, anticipates a positive reception for the channel, drawing a parallel to the evolution of content creation on platforms like YouTube.
Fenwick McKelvey, a professor at Concordia University, acknowledges Roku’s embrace of an AI channel as a cost-saving measure for streamers. The AI-generated content trend raises questions about viewer preferences and the role of television as a background medium.
Despite the growing presence of AI in content creation, concerns remain about issues such as copyright compliance and privacy protection. Industry watchdogs like the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists advocate for stricter regulations to safeguard human creators in the face of advancing AI technologies.
