Revived Tradition: Family Dinners on a Beige Mat

Must read

Isma Ishtiaq, a resident of Delta, B.C., reminisces about cherished childhood memories centered around family dinners. The tradition involved sitting cross-legged on a small beige mat while enjoying delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken. The warmth of the setting sun, the aroma of spiced food, and the exchange of stories created a sense of unity and cultural connection passed down from her father’s upbringing in Lahore to her own in the suburbs of north Delta.

As time passed and schedules became busier, the family dinners on the mat became a distant memory until a Thanksgiving dinner at the age of 23 reignited the tradition. Isma invited friends from diverse backgrounds to partake in the experience. The worn-out beige mat was retrieved from storage, and a circle was formed on the living room floor, sharing Thanksgiving turkey and stories.

The gathering symbolized a blend of heritage and Canadian customs, bridging the gap between past traditions and present-day practices. The positive response from Isma’s friends sparked a revival of the tradition within her family, emphasizing the importance of togetherness amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The revived tradition not only brought the family closer but also served as a reminder of the power of shared meals in strengthening familial bonds. Whether on the woven mat or at a formal dining table, the essence of togetherness during meal times remains a priority for the family, fostering unity and connection throughout the year.
