“UK Alt-Nets Outshine Major Broadband Providers”

Must read

A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations in terms of service reliability. The report indicates that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value.

The study highlights that issues with internet connectivity, such as frequent dropouts, are widespread among broadband users. Slow download speeds and service outages are also common sources of frustration for consumers.

An alarming 91% of broadband customers reported experiencing issues with their internet service over the past year, indicating that the vast majority of households have not had a trouble-free connection.

Among the prominent providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of users encountering this problem. Virgin Media also performed poorly, with 30% of customers facing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices for their broadband services. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin Media users complained about slow download speeds.

Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of their broadband service, with nearly one in three stating that it was inadequate. Other major providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received negative feedback from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers continue to excel, with Zen Internet receiving praise for its high reliability. Community Fibre and Hyperoptic also stood out for their performance. Among larger providers, Plusnet outperformed competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

These findings are consistent with previous research by Which?, demonstrating that smaller broadband companies consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money.

Which? is encouraging households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker can help identify available broadband networks easily.

In response to the report, a spokesperson for Virgin Media emphasized ongoing investments to enhance services and highlighted positive feedback from independent data sources regarding the quality of their broadband services.

Overall, the report underscores the importance of quality broadband service as an essential rather than a luxury. With various competitive deals available, consumers have the power to switch to providers that offer better service.
