In just half a year, the UK is gearing up for a significant transformation in its communication infrastructure, marking a monumental shift from the traditional copper phone network to the innovative Digital Voice platform starting January 2027. This revolutionary service, which utilizes broadband connections for calls instead of the age-old copper wires, is set to revolutionize how households communicate.
With the impending transition, households are urged not to overlook the importance of migrating to Digital Voice. Failure to make the switch could result in the loss of existing landline services, making it imperative for all to take action promptly.
A recent awareness campaign dubbed ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch’, spearheaded by Clare Balding, emphasized the necessity for households to prepare for the digital era by ensuring their landlines are ready for the upcoming changes.
While the national deadline is six months away, the transition is gaining momentum as BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has issued “stop sell” notices in an additional 112 telephone exchanges. This move prohibits broadband providers reliant on the Openreach network, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, from selling or transitioning customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in those regions.
Openreach’s “Stop Sell” initiative is activated when a majority (75%) of premises within a specific exchange have access to ultrafast Full Fibre. Subsequently, customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or re-grade their broadband or phone services will need to opt for the new digital service delivered over the advanced Full Fibre network.
This latest expansion brings the total number of exchanges under the Stop Sell directive to 1,572, encompassing approximately 15.4 million homes and businesses nationwide. Despite the perceived challenges associated with the transition to full fibre and Digital Voice, it promises substantial advantages, including enhanced broadband speeds, more dependable connections, and a modern phone service tailored to meet the demands of today’s digital landscape.
Individuals uncertain about the impact on their residences can verify the available services using the Openreach postcode checker tool.
James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, highlighted the significance of the Stop Sell program in expediting the UK’s transition to a modern full fibre infrastructure. As the demand for legacy copper-based services diminishes, the focus is on migrating individuals to newer, future-proof technologies. This strategic approach not only streamlines the maintenance of outdated and contemporary networks but also supports the industry-wide migration preparing for the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network switch-off, looming just six months ahead. Hence, the shift to a digital phone line is essential for all.
