Residents in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s birth village are making a plea to the renowned Hollywood actor to assist in reviving their Christmas festivity after the local market had to be canceled due to financial constraints.
The charming Austrian village of Thal, near Graz, where the famous Terminator star originates from, had to cancel its cherished annual Christkindlmarkt because of empty community funds. Locals are now looking to Schwarzenegger as the key figure who could potentially reinstate the event.
Expressing their sentiments, one resident mentioned on Facebook, “They should approach Arnie; he has a deep affection for his hometown. For him, it’s a small sum of money.” Another individual added, urging Schwarzenegger to show generosity towards his village. Despite these calls, there has been no indication of a Christmas miracle from California yet.
Mayor Matthias Brunner acknowledged the difficulty of the decision to cancel the event due to financial constraints. He conveyed his disappointment, stating that the community could no longer afford to cover the costs associated with the market.
The expenses, including stallholders, stage setup, sound equipment, beverages for the music club, decorations, and huts, totaled over 10,000 euros. With only 2,400 residents in the village, this expenditure became unmanageable, especially considering the continuous financial losses incurred by the event in prior years.
Online reactions varied, with some residents suggesting that Schwarzenegger should contribute financially to revive the Christmas spirit in Thal. Others countered this viewpoint, questioning why he should bear the entire burden. Amidst the discussions, the importance of preserving traditions, particularly during challenging times, was emphasized.
