David Lammy challenged US Vice President JD Vance regarding his criticism of the UK following Henry Nowak’s death, asserting that Vance’s views were inaccurate.
The Deputy Prime Minister disclosed that he had a conversation with Vance on Saturday, countering Vance’s claims that mass migration was to blame for the tragic incident involving Henry. Lammy emphasized that Henry’s death was unrelated to mass migration and highlighted ongoing investigations into the police’s handling of the case.
Vance had previously stated that Henry would have survived if not for what he described as the “politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants.”
The public expressed outrage after a distressing video showed Henry informing police about being stabbed and struggling to breathe, but his pleas were dismissed.
The perpetrator, Vickrum Digwa, a British national, misled the police by falsely alleging racial abuse. Lammy clarified during an interview that he disagreed with Vance’s stance, emphasizing that the issue was not tied to mass migration and pointing out the declining murder rates in the United Kingdom.
When asked about his interaction with Vance, Lammy stated that while they had a cordial conversation due to their existing relationship, he made it clear that he disagreed with Vance’s assertions and presented him with factual information.
Lammy further mentioned that Vance expressed concerns about Western values being under threat in both the US and Europe, a sentiment that Lammy disagreed with.
The conversation ended amicably with plans for future meetings, but Lammy advised Vance against making divisive statements, considering the wishes of the Nowak family to focus on unity rather than division.
In a separate incident, Nigel Farage raised concerns about policing disparities in the UK, echoing Vance’s sentiments on the tragic death of Henry Nowak.
Lammy reiterated his commitment to honoring Henry’s legacy through unity and progress, emphasizing the importance of learning from such cases to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
An investigation into Hampshire Police’s handling of Henry’s stabbing is ongoing, with the Independent Office for Police Conduct overseeing the process. Bodycam footage revealed a lack of belief in Henry’s statements by the officers on the scene. Subsequently, actions have been taken within the police force in response to the incident.
The UK Prime Minister expressed profound sympathy towards Henry’s family and vowed to work towards preventing such tragedies, ensuring that Henry’s legacy transcends the unfortunate circumstances of his death.
