A controversial figure in the cryptocurrency world has expressed his desire for a potential presidential pardon from former President Donald Trump while incarcerated. Sam Bankman-Fried, aged 34, is currently serving a lengthy prison term following a conviction for defrauding customers and investors of significant sums during his leadership of FTX, previously one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally.
During a recent phone interview with Fox Business, Bankman-Fried indicated his willingness to receive a pardon from the former president, stating that the decision ultimately rests with the president. He mentioned that neither he nor his family members have personally reached out to Trump regarding this matter.
FTX faced a downfall and filed for bankruptcy in November 2022, despite earlier success highlighted by a prominent Super Bowl advertisement and endorsements from celebrities. In a legal development, Bankman-Fried’s defense team sought to challenge his fraud conviction, arguing that the trial was unfair due to restrictions on presenting crucial evidence, especially related to legal counsel received by the defendant.
Despite these arguments, federal appeals court judges in Manhattan expressed skepticism towards overturning the conviction, citing substantial evidence supporting the guilty verdict. The defense’s claim of unfair trial proceedings was met with scrutiny by the judiciary, with government attorneys emphasizing the overwhelming evidence against Bankman-Fried, including testimony from key witnesses who exposed his misuse of customer funds for personal gain and political contributions.
The legal battle continues as the convicted crypto mogul seeks to challenge his conviction while serving his prison sentence.
