“World’s Most Wanted Drug Kingpin Captured in Spain”

Must read

One of the world’s most wanted drug kingpins was apprehended in Spain today, years after fabricating his own demise.

Wilmer Chavarria, also recognized as “Pipo,” was ultimately captured in Malaga as part of a joint operation involving Ecuadorian and Spanish authorities. Chavarria is suspected of leading Los Lobos, a drug trafficking group with an estimated 8,000 members.

Los Lobos was recently labeled a terrorist entity by the United States and has been implicated in political killings in Ecuador. The group is also known to collaborate closely with Mexico’s notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

According to Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, Chavarria staged his death in 2021 amid the Covid pandemic, assumed a new identity, and relocated to Spain. From there, he managed drug transports, sanctioned assassinations, and operated extortion schemes targeting gold mines in Ecuador.

While Ecuador was relatively peaceful in the early 2010s, the nation of 18 million inhabitants has encountered a surge in violent crimes, including homicides, as it becomes a crucial hub for cocaine trafficking from neighboring Colombia and Peru.

Drug cartels have targeted presidential candidates, local officials, and journalists in battles for control over ports and coastal towns.

Chavarria’s arrest coincides with Ecuadorians voting on a four-part referendum addressing potential amendments to the nation’s constitution to permit foreign military bases in Ecuador. President Noboa argues that this amendment is vital to enhancing anti-drug collaboration with countries like the United States and intensifying the pressure on drug traffickers.

Meanwhile, a manhunt has been initiated following the discovery of a young boy’s severed head in a backpack thrown into Golyanovsky Pond in Moscow. Initial reports suggest the child was strangled and decapitated, with the preliminary cause of death attributed to asphyxia. The victim, estimated to be between seven and ten years old, is yet to be identified, with indications pointing to the incident occurring two days prior.

Despite an extensive search of the lake by divers, no additional human remains were found. The backpack, contained within a red plastic bag, remains a key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
