A woman from the UK tragically lost her life in a snowstorm while on a once-in-a-lifetime journey, according to her employers. Victoria Bond, hailing from Cornwall, was identified as one of the individuals who perished in a severe snowstorm in Patagonia, Chile. She was the only British national among the casualties discovered after an extensive search operation in Torres del Paine National Park, where rescuers faced extreme 118mph winds. Four survivors were also found.
Efforts are now focused on repatriating the deceased – including two German and two Mexican citizens – back to their respective countries. Ms. Bond’s employers expressed deep sorrow over her passing.
The spokesperson for Visit Isles of Scilly, where Ms. Bond was employed as the head of public relations for over six years, confirmed that she was on a remarkable hiking adventure with friends in Argentina and Chile at the time of her death.
In a heartfelt statement, they described Ms. Bond as a charismatic and passionate individual with a positive outlook on life. Her colleagues praised her dedication and infectious laughter, emphasizing the profound impact she had on everyone who knew her.
Andrew Sells, Chair of Visit Isles of Scilly, commended Victoria as a delightful colleague and a vital asset to their team. Euan Rodger, Executive Vice Chair, expressed the team’s devastation over her untimely demise and acknowledged her exceptional dedication and spirit.
Following the conclusion of the search operation in Patagonia, authorities are coordinating the repatriation of the deceased. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed their support for Ms. Bond’s family in this difficult time.
Chile’s President, Gabriel Boric Font, extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and assured them of the full assistance and cooperation of Chilean authorities.
