A man aged 25 from Cork has been formally accused of the murder of his mother and the attack on his father. David Gallagher, residing at Shrewsbury Downs in Ballinlough, appeared in Cork District Court today after an incident involving a stabbing on Monday night. The police and emergency responders were summoned to a residence at Shrewsbury Downs around 9pm on Monday.
Gallagher faced charges of killing his mother, Stella Gallagher, aged 59, at their home on Monday, as well as assaulting his father, Brian Gallagher, aged 63, at the same location on the same evening. Stella Gallagher was rushed to Cork University Hospital on Monday night, where she was later pronounced dead. She had a background as a chemical engineer and had worked at Eli Lilly in Cork for several years.
During the court session, Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes from Blackrock Garda Station presented evidence of the arrest, charging, and cautioning procedures. Gallagher remained unresponsive when the charges were formally brought against him at 1.27pm. He had been held for questioning at Bridewell Garda Station.
Sergeant John Kelleher mentioned that the police would request a remand in custody at Cork District Court on November 26, emphasizing that bail is typically not granted for murder charges at this level. Gallagher’s defense solicitor, Shane Collins Daly, applied for and was granted free legal aid for his client, noting that Gallagher was unemployed. The solicitor also informed the court that Gallagher had received medical attention and medication during his custody.
Following a request from Mr. Collins Daly, Judge John King approved an urgent medical and psychiatric evaluation for Gallagher upon his arrival on remand at Cork Prison. The judge ensured that the defendant would receive necessary medical care while in prison. Gallagher was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Cork District Court via video link on November 26.
