A mother who is raising her child alone has been sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison for the suspected killing of two Australian brothers and their friend in Mexico.
Callum, 33, and Jake, 30, Robinson, along with their companion Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, disappeared during a surfing expedition in Baja, Mexico, on April 27 last year. The bodies of the surfers were found in a well a few days later on May 3, along with a fourth unidentified body.
Ari Gisell, a 23-year-old single mother and former partner of Jesús Gerardo, has been accused of murder along with two other individuals. According to reports, Gisell expressed interest in the car tires belonging to the Robinsons and Rhoad, leading to the tragic events.
Prosecutors alleged that Jesús Gerardo, accompanied by Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús, encountered the group of tourists after dropping off Gisell at her residence. The trio then followed the victims to their camping location, where they allegedly robbed and fatally shot them.
During the court proceedings, Debra Robinson, the mother of Callum and Jake, conveyed her profound grief over the loss of her sons’ promising futures. Similarly, Natalie Weirtz, the widow of Carter Rhoad, expressed her devastation virtually during the court session, describing the profound impact of the tragedy on her life.
Gisell, visibly emotional, listened to the heart-wrenching testimonies and eventually acknowledged her wrongdoing, expressing deep remorse for the irreplaceable losses suffered by the victims’ families. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison for violent vehicle robbery and an additional six years for robbery with violence, along with a monetary fine.
Jesús Gerardo, Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús have been charged with aggravated homicide related to the deaths of the Robinsons and Rhoad. Their trial date is pending, and another individual cooperating with authorities is not believed to have been directly involved in the crimes.
Efforts to locate a fourth suspected perpetrator, whose identity remains confidential, are ongoing as authorities pursue justice in this tragic case.
