“Police Plan Remote Mine Shaft Search for Missing 4-Year-Old”

Must read

Police have provided an unsettling update regarding the search for four-year-old Gus Lamont, who went missing from his grandparents’ residence in South Australia. Authorities have announced plans to search a series of remote mine shafts in the ongoing effort to locate the boy. The disappearance occurred two months ago at a secluded sheep station in the South Australian outback, prompting an extensive search operation involving police, military personnel, SES teams, divers, and local residents. The upcoming search operation, spanning up to three days, will utilize specialized equipment to inspect six previously undiscovered mine shafts situated between 5.5km and 12km from the property where Gus was last sighted in Oak Park.

South Australia Police have revealed that these shafts were not previously explored by ground search teams and were unknown to law enforcement prior to this development. Deputy Commissioner of Police Linda Williams expressed the commitment to exhaust all possible avenues in the quest to find Gus Lamont and bring closure to his family. The search of the mine shafts aims to either uncover evidence related to the case or rule out these locations from further scrutiny by the investigative Task Force.

Authorities emphasize that this new phase of the investigation is critical to ensuring thorough examination of all potentially relevant sites in the efforts to locate Gus. Concerns within the community emerged early in the search, with locals expressing fears that the boy might have fallen into hidden shafts in the area. An individual shared concerns about unmarked wells and mines, highlighting the challenges posed by these concealed hazards. Despite initial searches, police eliminated the possibility of drowning after draining a large dam on the property on October 31. Previous ground and aerial searches had been conducted around the Oak Park Station homestead following Gus’s disappearance.

Efforts to locate Gus have involved multiple search operations, including collaborations between SA Police, ADF members, SES volunteers, trackers, and local landowners. The search radius from the homestead has expanded to 5.5km, covering a significant area on foot and by air. Police affirm that various investigative avenues are being pursued, with ongoing support provided to Gus’s family through a victim contact office.
