A British traveler faced a setback at the airport due to a passport issue, disrupting their holiday plans. Terry Winter, aged 56, and his wife, Molly Winter, 62, had meticulously organized a two-week vacation to Tenerife. Despite having valid passports, a pre-booked hotel stay, and dinner plans, they encountered a problem during check-in at Birmingham Airport on the morning of Friday, 12 June.

When Terry tried to check in with easyJet, his passport triggered an error message, indicating it was not considered valid. Although the passport had not expired, it had been issued over a decade ago, failing to meet the EU’s entry regulations. This requirement, under post-Brexit travel rules, mandates that UK passports must be issued within the past 10 years before visiting most European countries.

Terry was taken aback by this revelation, expressing surprise at not being aware of the rule. He discovered that several other passengers at the airport were facing similar issues simultaneously. This incident mirrored a recent case where a mother of three was also barred from boarding an easyJet flight to Greece due to a similar passport oversight, incurring substantial additional costs.

Despite booking the trip months in advance and entering passport details on the easyJet website, Terry was not forewarned about the passport validity rule. He underwent an urgent passport renewal process through His Majesty’s Passport Office, opting for the premium one-day service to acquire a new passport. His wife, whose passport remained valid, stayed back to offer support.

Following a challenging process to secure an appointment in Peterborough, Terry obtained a new passport after a few hours and rescheduled their Tenerife flight for Tuesday, 16 June. The unexpected expenses resulting from this passport issue amounted to nearly £1,000, covering various costs like accommodation, flight rebooking, and passport fees.

Expressing disappointment in the lack of prior notification regarding the passport rule, Terry highlighted the inconveniences caused by the incident. He also criticized easyJet for sending a generic reminder email after the missed flight, emphasizing the need for timely communication to avoid such mishaps.

An easyJet spokesperson acknowledged the situation, emphasizing the importance of passengers ensuring their travel documents meet requirements. The airline maintains a dedicated webpage outlining passport rules for travelers to reference. Additionally, guidance is provided on the UK government’s website for renewing or replacing passports.

Travelers are advised to verify passport validity and issue dates before embarking on European trips to avoid complications. Renewing or replacing passports can be done online or through the HM Passport Office, as outlined on the government’s official website.
