Anti-Tourism Protests to Disrupt Balearic Islands

Must read

Tourism-related demonstrations are set to disrupt popular holiday destinations in the Balearic Islands this summer. Majorca and Menorca are gearing up for anti-tourism protests, with Majorca anticipating a standstill on July 26 and Menorca planning marches on June 13.

Over 50 organizations in these sought-after vacation spots are calling for action to “collapse” Palma, the capital of Mallorca. The protests are orchestrated by “Menys turisme, mes vida” (“Less tourism, more life”), the group behind significant demonstrations in 2024. They expect this year’s rallies to attract even larger crowds, urging local residents to show support.

Major protests are scheduled at the base of Palma’s cathedral, a popular stop for cruise passengers. David Comas, a spokesperson for the group, cautioned about the challenging summer ahead for the Balearic Islands. He highlighted concerns about the total solar eclipse on August 12, which is projected to bring a surge in visitors, potentially overwhelming the island.

The demonstrations aim to highlight not only the sheer volume of tourists but also the adverse effects on the local population’s quality of life. Menys Turisme, més vida emphasizes the vulnerability of thousands of workers due to housing issues, branding the island as a “theme park” where residents’ right to live is compromised.

In a similar vein, Lanzarote has witnessed protests against mass tourism, with reports of Airbnb key boxes being glued shut and access to tourist sites restricted. Protestors have taken measures to deter visitors, including using tape and warning notices. Graffiti with messages like “Tourists go home” has appeared across the island.

Past protests in the Canary Islands, such as in Tenerife, have also targeted the impacts of mass tourism on local housing and infrastructure. Calls for visitor restrictions or tourism taxes have been echoed to alleviate the pressure on the islands. Locals have raised concerns about being displaced by landlords converting properties into vacation rentals, leading to housing affordability challenges exacerbated by tourism demand.

The debate surrounding overcrowding in the Balearic Islands and the implications of the protests on future holiday plans continues. Share your thoughts at webtravel@reachplc.com.
