Legal Action Results in Compensation for Sunbed Dispute

Must read

If you’re planning a sunny getaway in the near future, chances are you’ll want to relax on a sunbed by the pool. However, there are annual incidents where vacationers reserve sunbeds with towels, causing frustration among others.

A recent incident arose when a father, who had spent over £6,000 on a vacation to Kos, Greece, took legal action in Germany after facing difficulties securing a sunbed despite waking up at 6am. The court in Hanover ruled in his favor, awarding him €986.70 (approximately £850) in compensation. This case has raised discussions on whether hotels should intervene in sunbed disputes.

To tackle the issue, many resorts have implemented strategies to prevent the early morning rush for sunbeds. For instance, some Iberostar hotels like Selection Sábila in Tenerife allow guests to reserve sunbeds via a convenient app.

Certain hotels, such as Sunrise Group hotels like Sunrise Beach Hotel in Protaras, Cyprus, offer guests the option to select specific sunbeds upon check-in for the duration of their stay. Guests can also request a different sunbed location, subject to availability.

In response to sunbed reservation conflicts, some resorts have taken measures to discourage the practice. For example, at the H10 Salauris Palace in Salou, Spain, warnings are issued against reserving sunbeds with towels, with items left unattended being removed by staff after a designated time.

In another instance, a holidaymaker at a French holiday camp reported that all items left on unattended loungers are moved to lost property twice a day if the guest is not present.

For beach enthusiasts, it’s important to be aware of the rules regarding reserving sunbeds on the sand. In one case, two elderly vacationers were fined £250 for reserving sunbeds on the frontline of a beach in Cullera, near Valencia city, where beach access is restricted during certain hours.
