Lawmakers Push for Probe into Farage Phone Hack

Must read

Top lawmakers are urging a thorough investigation into the alleged hacking of Nigel Farage’s phone. Concerns have been raised about Farage’s claims of his phone being compromised, leading to calls for restricting his access to Whitehall’s network and communication with government officials. Farage stated that confidential information, including a £5 million gift from a billionaire, was leaked due to Kremlin-linked hackers breaching his device.

The Liberal Democrats have reached out to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), emphasizing the seriousness of a political leader potentially having their phone accessed by a foreign entity. Deputy leader Daisy Cooper highlighted the implications of such a breach on UK democracy, urging the NCSC to promptly look into the matter.

Farage, leader of Reform UK, has accused hackers of revealing his undisclosed financial gift before the 2024 general election. The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner is investigating the unreported sum, with Reform asserting it was a personal gift rather than a political contribution.

Allegations of foreign state actors, particularly linked to Moscow, tampering with Farage’s phone have triggered a heated debate. Despite claims from Reform sources about the phone being compromised, former NCSC head Ciaran Martin has refuted these assertions as baseless.

Labour chair Anna Turley has threatened to involve law enforcement if Farage fails to substantiate his hacking claims. The lack of evidence and transparency from Farage has raised concerns about the security of sensitive information and potential blackmail risks.

Letters to the NCSC and National Security Secretariat have called for strict measures against Farage, including barring him from accessing sensitive data and Whitehall’s networks. The urgency to prevent further security breaches and safeguard against potential leaks to foreign entities has been emphasized by the opposition party.

Reform UK and the NCSC have been approached for comments, with Reform affirming that the incident has been reported to authorities. The NCSC reiterated its commitment to defending democracy and offering cybersecurity support to combat online threats.
