“Labour Leadership Contenders Emerge Amid Calls for Change”

Must read

Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting are positioning themselves as potential challengers to Keir Starmer following Labour’s recent losses in local elections. Despite calls for Starmer to step down and ministerial resignations, he remains steadfast in his position.

Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the PM, cautioned against engaging in “fantasy politics” within the Labour Party, emphasizing the need to focus on addressing the country’s challenges rather than internal power struggles. Former Labour Home Secretary Alan Johnson expressed support for Starmer, stating that there is no justification for his immediate departure.

Johnson criticized the idea of Burnham or Streeting taking on the leadership, highlighting the importance of leading the opposition effectively to eventually return to government. He suggested that a snap election would be necessary if Burnham were to become Prime Minister.

Burnham launched his by-election campaign, emphasizing the need for change within the Labour Party. Meanwhile, Streeting proposed a wealth tax to revive the Sure Start program, signaling his potential entry into a leadership race.
