Hollywood Actor John Pickard Killed by Bull

Must read

A renowned Hollywood character actor from his generation met a tragic end when he was fatally injured by a bull he had leased for breeding on his personal farm. Today, his final resting place is just a few feet from the site of the unfortunate incident.

John Pickard, known for his role in the classic film True Grit (1969) alongside John Wayne, hailed from Lascassas, Tennessee. Described as one of the most distinguished character actors in the film industry, Pickard’s career was highlighted by his appearances on the silver screen, as mentioned by Rutherford TN History. Beginning his acting journey in 1936 after completing high school, Pickard even featured in a US Navy war bond poster by 1939.

Following his service in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, Pickard delved deeper into acting upon his return and became a prominent figure in Western films and dramas. He made his debut alongside John Wayne in The Wake Of The Red Witch (1948) and continued to captivate audiences for over four decades in the entertainment industry, culminating in his role as Frank Ross in True Grit (1969).

Prior to his tragic demise, Pickard appeared in a 1987 episode of the TV series Simon and Simon. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he was fatally attacked by a bull at the age of 80 during a family gathering on his Lascassas farm in 1993. The incident occurred as Pickard had rented the bull for breeding purposes, unaware of the imminent danger it posed. At the time of his passing, Pickard was survived by his wife, Ann, son John, and three grandchildren.

One of Pickard’s early roles was in the 1936 film “Mary of Scotland” when he was just 23 years old. He later secured a recurring role in the TV series Boots and Saddles, appearing in a total of 38 episodes. The popular show, filmed in Utah and aired between 1957 and 1958, showcased Pickard’s versatility as an actor. His family history tied back to Tennessee, with his great-great-grandfather being an early settler in what was then Davidson County, now known as Nashville.

Additionally, Pickard had connections to notable figures like his great-aunt Willie Betty Newman, a plantation owner and renowned artist before the Civil War. The production of True Grit faced controversies, notably involving Elvis Presley who was initially considered for a supporting role but negotiations fell through due to billing disputes. The film also experienced tensions with another actor causing friction during filming.
