A British helicopter pilot has been handed a 20-year prison sentence in Spain for the chemsex murder of a man he had arranged to meet for a weekend of intimacy. Three weeks ago, a jury found Aaron Rainbow guilty of the violent and intentional killing of Oscar Tornero, stabbing him six times after a drug binge.
Trial judge Carmen Sucias Rodriguez has confirmed the sentence in an 87-page ruling, denying any leniency for drug use. Rainbow has been ordered to pay nearly £470,000 in compensation to Oscar’s family and ex-partner, with the majority going to his daughter.
During the trial, Rainbow claimed self-defense, attributing his actions to drug-induced confusion and paranoia. He stated feeling threatened by the belief that he was being recorded and targeted for harm.
The jury considered witness testimonies, including an incident in London where Rainbow exhibited violent behavior under the influence of drugs. The prosecution sought a 19-year sentence, which was increased to 20 years post-verdict.
Rainbow’s defense argued temporary insanity and fear as contributing factors to the crime. His family alleged mishandling of the investigation by Spanish authorities, emphasizing concerns of being surveilled.
The pilot’s time in prison since his arrest will be factored into his release date determination.
