Barcelona is renowned for several things, including the iconic Sagrada Familia, the architectural wonders by Gaudí, and more recently, demonstrations. During my previous trip to the city 12 years ago, I noticed anti-tourism messages, particularly concerning the growing presence of Airbnb accommodations in Barcelona.
Presently, short-term rentals are subject to strict regulations and must obtain licenses. The city has announced that it will not renew these licenses, leading to the gradual elimination of 10,000 tourist apartments by November 2028. Additional measures include capping visitor numbers at attractions like Park Güell and enforcing a restriction on cruise ships docking at the city’s central port, requiring them to disembark passengers farther away to alleviate congestion.
On my recent visit, I found Barcelona to be bustling but not overwhelmingly crowded, especially compared to the hectic atmosphere of Central London on a sunny Saturday. The city seemed well-prepared to handle the influx of tourists, with efficient security lines and guided tourist flows at popular sites like the Sagrada Familia.
During my exploration, I also visited Casa Batlló, another masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí, which attracts a significant number of visitors annually. While the site can get busy, early morning ticket bookings allow visitors to avoid long queues. Despite sticking to popular tourist spots like La Rambla and La Boqueria, I encountered no anti-tourism sentiments in Barcelona.
The locals were welcoming and accommodating, offering suggestions on places to visit and providing excellent service at establishments across the city. If planning a trip to Barcelona, consider visiting during the spring or autumn seasons to enjoy a less crowded experience. Additionally, respecting local customs, learning basic Spanish phrases, and supporting local businesses can contribute positively to the tourist experience and community relationships.
TUI provides convenient travel packages to Barcelona, including accommodation at the H10 Madison Hotel and various city experiences. Embracing a mindful approach to travel can help improve the reputation of British tourists abroad.
