An overcrowded scene at one of the world’s renowned coastlines has sparked concerns about overtourism.
Situated in the Andaman Sea, the Koh Phi Phi islands in Thailand boast stunning scenery with towering limestone cliffs, pristine white sand beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise waters teeming with exotic marine life.
These islands have been a popular tourist destination for years, especially after being featured in the movie “The Beach” by director Danny Boyle.
However, the surge in visitors following the film’s success has taken a toll on the once serene Maya Bay, where the movie was filmed. The bay now attracts large crowds seeking to enjoy its azure waters and golden sands.
Recent footage from Koh Phi Phi depicts a massive group of sunbathers tightly packed near the dock, even before reaching Maya Bay.
The video, shared on Reddit, received negative feedback with users expressing disappointment at the overwhelming crowds, describing the experience as chaotic and far from enjoyable.
Efforts to address overtourism on the islands have been challenging, as highlighted by Koh Tours in a recent blog post. Despite implementing measures like timed entries, boat limits, and restrictions on overnight stays and sunscreen use in the water, the situation remains crowded.
Koh Phi Phi Leh, the smaller island with Maya Bay, was closed for three years to recover from environmental damage caused by excessive tourism. Although reopened with improved regulations in 2022, the island still sees large numbers of visitors at any given time.
Additionally, Koh Phi Phi Don, the archipelago’s main island, faces similar issues with overcrowding, particularly in the village of Tonsai Bay.
Intrepid Travel’s destination manager, Jub Yata, emphasized the need for more responsible tourism practices in Thailand to protect popular destinations like Maya Bay. Intrepid Travel has been redirecting tourists to lesser-known islands like Koh Thap, Koh Poda, and Koh Khai to alleviate the pressure on overcrowded spots.
Koh Thap, known for its mesmerizing parting of the seas phenomenon, is a favorite stop for island-hopping tours around Krabi.
On the other hand, Koh Poda offers a serene and secluded atmosphere, with one traveler comparing it to a deserted paradise akin to Robinson Crusoe’s island.
In contrast, Koh Khai in Phuket, comprising three interconnected islands, is the most developed among the three islands on the Intrepid tour. With opportunities for snorkeling and swimming, Khai Nai, the largest island, boasts stunning views and a pristine sandy beach.
By promoting sustainable and mindful tourism practices, companies like Intrepid Travel aim to preserve the natural beauty of these Thai islands while offering visitors unique and less crowded experiences.
