“Trump Urges Acceptance of Higher Gas Prices to Thwart Iran”

Must read

U.S. President Donald Trump called on Americans to embrace slightly increased gasoline prices as a necessary measure to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. He hinted at declaring the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory in the near future. This position poses a political challenge for Trump as he faces criticism for rising fuel costs conflicting with his pledge to reduce energy expenses. Democrats are poised to capitalize on the economic repercussions of potential conflict with Iran in the upcoming midterm elections.

During a speech in Garden City, N.Y., Trump emphasized that the incremental rise in gasoline prices was a small sacrifice to prevent a “very evil country” from obtaining nuclear capabilities. He defended his administration’s actions, stating that the U.S. was serving the world’s interests by preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and stressed that he would not apologize for confronting Iran.

Approximately 20% of global oil and LNG shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a critical chokepoint. Concerns about potential disruptions in the region have led to an uptick in oil prices. Trump’s statement about potentially declaring the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory heightened tensions, although the seriousness of the remark and its policy implications remain unclear.

In response to Trump’s comments, Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, dismissed the notion of the strait being taken over by external forces, emphasizing that Iran retained control over the waterway’s operations. The ongoing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to impact global energy markets, with Brent crude nearing $90 a barrel and U.S. gasoline prices reaching around $4 per gallon.
