Britons will soon have the opportunity to vie for a massive £1 billion prize in the upcoming lottery draw. Allwyn, the operator of the National Lottery, has officially announced that tickets for the UK version of the renowned American Powerball game will go on sale starting July 21, with the drawing scheduled for July 23.
Over the initial five years, the game is projected to generate approximately £1 billion for charitable causes in the UK. This marks the first time the Powerball game will be held outside the US, following the successful introduction of the pan-European Euromillions draw in 2004.
Tickets priced at £4 each can be purchased online or in-store until 11.55pm the night before the draws, which occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The draws take place around 4am the following morning – on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday – at the Powerball studio in Florida.
Participants select five main numbers ranging from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26, or they can opt for a Lucky Dip. UK players will compete against participants from 48 lotteries in the United States, with exclusive features tailored for the UK market.
Notably, the UK game introduces a “match two main numbers” prize category unique to UK players, offering a fixed prize of £8. Additionally, there will be a “match five main numbers” tier with a fixed prize of £1 million.
To secure a jackpot of at least £12 million, players must match all five main numbers and the Powerball. Unlike other lotteries, there is no limit to the number of rollovers, allowing the jackpot to escalate significantly.
Allwyn anticipates that a UK resident could potentially claim a monumental £1 billion prize, the largest ever offered. However, the odds of winning the top prize are slim, standing at one in 292 million.
In contrast to most National Lottery winners who receive their tax-free winnings in a lump sum, Powerball jackpot winners receive their prize over a 30-year period. For a £1 billion win, the annual payout would exceed £30 million for three decades. In the event of an early demise, the remaining prize money will be passed on to the winner’s estate.
The biggest Powerball winner to date is Edwin Castro, who secured over $2 billion on the California state lottery in November 2022. Despite the option to receive the winnings over several decades, Castro chose a one-time payment, reducing the prize to just under $1 billion after taxes.
Castro, who acquired the winning ticket at a fuel station, used his windfall to purchase an £18 million luxury home in the Hollywood Hills, a £3 million Japanese-inspired residence for his parents, as well as various luxury vehicles and extravagant trips.
Moreover, Castro invested $10 million in acquiring 15 plots of land in Altadena, his hometown near Los Angeles, which was devastated by wildfires the previous year. Expressing his desire to restore the neighborhood, he aimed to recreate the pre-fire ambiance of the area.
Andria Vidler, the CEO of Allwyn, expressed enthusiasm for the launch of Powerball in the UK, highlighting the potential for life-changing jackpots and significant support for charitable projects across the country. The upcoming draw is eagerly anticipated, with a major promotional campaign planned to encourage participation and the hope for the first UK Powerball winner.
