The BT Tower, a prominent feature of the London skyline for many years, has served various purposes, including housing a rotating restaurant and serving as a news display. However, access to the tower has been restricted to the public since 1981, except for occasional special events, limiting the opportunity for close interaction with this iconic landmark.
Originally known as the Post Office Tower, the Grade II-listed building in Fitzrovia was constructed in 1964 and held the title of London’s tallest structure for a significant period. Unfortunately, a bomb incident in 1971 led to the closure of its restaurant and viewing galleries, further restricting public access.
In recent developments, architecture firm Orms has proposed a transformation of the BT Tower into a high-end hotel with a rooftop pool. The project, unveiled at a recent public consultation, envisions a visitor experience space offering panoramic views of the London skyline and the conversion of the 1960s-era buildings at the tower’s base into retail outlets and cafes, with plans to remove modern additions deemed unattractive.
The proposed overhaul also includes the creation of a new public square with pedestrian pathways within the complex, serving as the entry and exit points for the visitor experience area. Additionally, plans involve the installation of a new staircase to provide access to the tower’s core, surrounded by hotel rooms.
While discussions have touched on potential uses for levels 24 to 30, which could be designated for art and cultural activities, concrete plans for these spaces are yet to be finalized. The upcoming autumn will see Camden Council receiving the planning application for the BT Tower site, paving the way for potential commencement of renovation work in 2029, contingent upon the removal of telecom equipment by BT.
Notably, the BT Tower joins a trend of historical London landmarks being repurposed as hotels, with Custom House and Admiralty Arch also undergoing transformations into luxury accommodations, offering amenities such as spa facilities, dining options, and picturesque views of Buckingham Palace.
