Trump alleged that arrests, including that of a former Olympian, were made in connection to the vandalism. He claimed that the historic site had been defaced and chemicals poured into the pool, leading to the need for restoration work.
Trump, using his platform Truth Social, stated that federal officers had apprehended several suspects involved in the vandalism. He emphasized the significance of the damage done to the Reflecting Pool, highlighting the extensive efforts and resources invested in its construction. Contractors notified Trump of the need to drain the pool for repairs as part of a renovation project initiated for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The former Olympian, David Hearn, denied allegations of vandalism after being detained by Park Police for reportedly tampering with the pool’s liner. Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist, informed authorities that he merely touched a loose piece of the liner while passing by the monument. Despite his insistence on innocence, Hearn faced hours of detention before his scheduled court appearance.
In addition to criticizing the vandalism, Trump also accused a journalist of interfering with the Reflecting Pool by attempting to scrape its surface. The President’s comments came after reports of algae accumulation and degradation of the pool’s paint job, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the renovation efforts. Trump claimed that measures, including the use of nanobubbler technology, had reduced the algae problem by 75 percent.
