Dan Kelly, a man who has traveled to 1,000 supermarkets across 150 countries, shared that he identified several British products commonly found in most stores worldwide. Beginning his global supermarket journey in 2014 during a job search, Dan, a languages and humanities graduate, landed a role with a company that specialized in collecting cost of living data for businesses relocating employees.
Assigned to assess product prices in supermarkets across various countries, Dan’s findings were then submitted to a London office for analysis. This task led him to visit different major cities every few days armed with a list of approximately 164 items to price check in each location.
After exploring 1,000 supermarkets in 150 countries over 11 years, mostly travelling solo with a daily allowance of £70 for accommodation, Dan became highly familiar with supermarkets, shopping centers, and even aircraft interiors worldwide.
Speaking about his experiences, Dan revealed some surprising discoveries he made, highlighting two popular UK items that stood out in many supermarkets, such as coffee, tea, and specific types of biscuits. Notably, he often encountered Twining’s English Breakfast Tea and Nescafé Gold during his travels.
Although Dan has moved on from this role, which he acknowledges as one that most people do not stay in for as long as he did, he fondly remembers it and has even created a comedy show based on his adventures. Reflecting on his time, Dan emphasized the importance of human interaction in his job, noting that simple conversations and smiles went a long way in his daily interactions.
While Dan’s expertise lies in global supermarket pricing, UK consumers have recently been informed about the most budget-friendly supermarket in the country. According to Which?, ALDI emerged as the cheapest UK supermarket in May, with an overall cost of £168.30 for 95 products compared across different stores. Which? explained their methodology for determining the most affordable supermarket, emphasizing their thorough price comparison process across major retailers.
