After being ridiculed for years, a UK city is in the process of reviving its large swimming pool complex that was demolished nearly four decades ago. Hull, known for its past reputation as one of the ‘UK’s worst places to live’ and its decline in fishing and shipping industries, has faced unfair criticism even from those unfamiliar with the city. However, Kingston upon Hull, as it is officially called, has transformed into a vibrant city with independent bars, art galleries, and attractions like The Deep aquarium.
Recognized by National Geographic as one of the ‘best places in the world to travel to in 2026’, Hull is set to reclaim its lost gem, the East Park lido. The outdoor swimming pool, which closed in 1985 and was torn down in 1988, was a popular spot in its time. With recent tragic incidents in open water highlighting the need for safe swimming environments, the local council has agreed to explore the restoration of the former lido in East Park.
Councillor Jessica Smith, advocating for drowning prevention, emphasized the importance of providing safe swimming facilities. The proposal received support from Councillor Kalvin Neal, suggesting a potential relocation for the lido. Restoring the lido would be a valuable addition to Hull, complementing the city’s only existing council-run lido at Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness, which has been a success since its refurbishment in 2023.
Councillor George Grozav echoed the urgency of addressing the issue, stating that open water accidents, especially involving young people, are tragic events that must be prevented. The initiative to bring back the lido aligns with Hull’s commitment to ensuring swimming safety and providing educational resources for the community during the summer months.
