Virgin Media has recently discounted its fastest broadband package to a historically low price point. The company has initiated an unexpected sale that has slashed over £70 off its ultra-fast Gig1 Fibre Broadband.
This broadband plan offers lightning-fast speeds of up to 1,130Mbps, typically priced at £29.99 per month. However, it is currently available for only £26.99, resulting in a substantial saving of £72 over the 24-month contract, averaging around 87p per day.
Virgin claims that this promotion marks the “lowest ever price” for its Gig1 plan. With these speeds, users can download a feature-length HD movie in under 30 seconds and have a 50GB PS5 game ready to play in less than seven minutes.
While households with 70Mbps speeds may experience over 90 minutes for the same game download, Virgin’s offer ensures a smooth connection for activities like streaming Netflix and online gaming. It’s essential to note that the discounted rate of £26.99 will increase twice during the minimum term, reaching £30.99 from April 2027 and £34.99 from April 2028. Additionally, the 1,130Mbps speeds may not be available in all UK locations, so it is advisable to verify availability using Virgin’s postcode checker.
In comparison to competitors like Sky, Virgin’s £26.99 Gig1 deal stands out as a cost-effective option. Despite Sky reducing its 900Mbps plan to £28, it remains pricier than Virgin and offers slower speeds. Moreover, BT’s 900Mbps connection is even more expensive at £37.99. Considering alternatives, some smaller providers, known as alt-nets, are emerging in the UK, offering competitive pricing compared to major brands.
For instance, Community Fibre currently provides 1Gbps speeds at £25 per month, with the first three months free and fixed prices throughout the contract. However, this service is limited to London and select south-east regions.
Not everyone requires ultra-high speeds of around 1Gbps, so it’s important to assess individual needs before committing to a lengthy contract. For instance, a couple streaming Netflix daily in a flat may find 100Mbps sufficient, while larger households engaged in remote work, downloads, and online gaming may benefit from speeds of at least 300Mbps.
