When you visit the Mediterranean in the summer, you’ll often see tables filled with large glasses of Aperol Spritz. This iconic orange cocktail has become a popular choice for holidaymakers, whether enjoyed at a café in an old town or a bar by the beach.
Like many aspects of holidays, the cost of Aperol Spritz has been increasing in popular resorts, making it a pricey indulgence. However, there are still places where you can get a reasonably priced cocktail, and one city has been identified as the most affordable spot to savor a refreshing Aperol.
eurochange, a travel money provider, has compiled an Aperol Spritz index highlighting the top ten cheapest destinations in Europe to enjoy this summery drink without breaking the bank. Fortunately, the least expensive location is just a short three-hour flight away from the UK.
According to the study, Naples in Italy is the most budget-friendly place to order an Aperol, with an average cost of €2 (around £1.73). One particular bar is renowned for serving these cocktails at just one Euro (approximately 86p). Despite its simple setup of tables squeezed into an alleyway and drinks served in plastic cups, Cammarota Spritz has garnered positive reviews for its vibrant atmosphere and affordable prices.
After enjoying a few low-cost spritzes, you might find yourself craving another Naples classic: pizza. As the birthplace of modern pizza, Naples offers numerous hole-in-the-wall eateries where you can grab a slice. A popular snack is pizza al portafoglio, also known as ‘wallet pizza,’ which is folded and served in paper for convenient on-the-go eating.
Naples is an ideal destination for a spring or autumn city break, with around 210 sunny days annually, allowing you to explore the historic streets and attractions like Museo Cappella Sansevero, home to the mesmerizing Veiled Christ statue.
Delve into the city’s ancient sites at Napoli Sotterranea, an underground tour that leads you through a maze of streets and squares constructed by Romans and Greeks beneath the city’s surface. Wander through narrow aqueduct tunnels, explore World War 2 air raid shelters, and ascend through a hatch into the ancient Roman theatre of Neapolis.
In addition to its cultural offerings, Naples boasts various beaches, including small sandy stretches on the city’s outskirts. While these urban beaches can be compact and crowded during peak times, they are perfect for a quick dip in the Mediterranean.
For a beach day, you can take a bus to a beach club or a public beach further down the coast. Near Naples, you’ll find Gaiola Beach, known for its islets reachable by bridge, and the picturesque rocky coastline of Scoglione Marechiaro, famed for its turquoise waters.
