Four activists from Palestine Action have been sentenced to jail for their involvement in a break-in at a defense company in the UK linked to Israel. The incident, which occurred in Bristol on August 6, 2024, resulted in £1.2 million worth of damage to the Elbit Systems UK factory. Samuel Corner, 23, was sentenced to eight years and eight months for causing bodily harm and damage, with a possibility of parole after seven years and eight months. Charlotte Head, 30, and Leona Kamio, 30, received six-year sentences less 45 days for damage, with potential parole after four years and 320 days. Fatema Rajwani, 21, was jailed for five years and eight months less 45 days for criminal damage, eligible for parole after four years and 200 days.
The arrests followed a demonstration outside Woolwich Crown Court in support of Palestine Action, where police detained 107 individuals. Subsequently, protesters obstructed the prison van transporting the activists, leading to confrontations with law enforcement.
Palestine Action, previously labeled a terrorist group but later deemed unlawful by the High Court, continues to face legal challenges. Despite the ban being lifted, supporting the organization remains a criminal offense, subject to further judicial review.
During the break-in, the activists used a prison van to gain entry to the facility, causing extensive damage. The court ruling classified the incident as having a “terrorist connection,” aiming to influence the UK government’s policies regarding Israel. Justice Johnson emphasized that while the defendants held strong beliefs about the situation in Gaza, their actions crossed the line into criminality.
The defendants, described as young individuals with good character, were motivated by their beliefs but chose unlawful means to express their grievances. The court highlighted their right to hold opinions on the conflict but condemned their resort to illegal actions.
