A senior citizen passed away 20 days after being robbed while withdrawing money from a cash machine in north London. Jalal Khan, aged 76, sustained a head injury during the ambush on October 30 and was swiftly taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he eventually succumbed on Wednesday, November 19. Known for his gentle and kind nature, Jalal resided near the post office on High Street in Ponders End, believed to be the location of the assault.
According to a police statement, the Metropolitan Police responded to a robbery and assault report on High Street in Ponders End around 11 am on October 30. Jalal Khan was found with head injuries and was transported to the hospital in a critical state. Tragically, he passed away on November 19. His family is receiving support from specialized officers and has requested privacy during this challenging period.
A witness from the post office mentioned that Jalal was robbed while using the cash machine outside. Describing him as a familiar face and a kind individual, the witness expressed sorrow over the incident that occurred just outside the shop premises.
Paying homage to Jalal, Rasel Alam, owner of the Enfield Food Hall, praised him as an exceptionally kind and peaceful person. Alam emphasized Jalal’s friendly demeanor, community involvement, and the impact he had on those around him.
A neighbor described Jalal as a gentle and ideal neighbor, expressing shock at the tragic event that unfolded so near his home.
In relation to the incident, the police have gathered CCTV and doorbell camera footage from the vicinity. Jaesis Boatswain, a 40-year-old resident of Swan Walk in Enfield, has been charged with several offenses including assault, robbery, and wielding a knife. Boatswain appeared in court on November 6 and is currently in custody awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for December 10 at Wood Green Crown Court.
