Two young brothers, aged one and two, tragically drowned in a First Nation community located in the Island Lake area of eastern Manitoba, as confirmed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The authorities were informed about the incident when the children were brought to the Garden Hill Anisininew Nation’s nursing station on Wednesday afternoon. Family members discovered the toddlers in a nearby lake and transported them to the nursing station with the assistance of First Nation safety officers, where they were unfortunately pronounced dead.
According to the police, it is believed that the boys wandered away from their home and entered the lake, with no suspicion of foul play involved. Alex McDougall, the grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin representing the four First Nations in the Island Lake region, expressed deep sympathy for the family and the community in the wake of this tragic loss. He mentioned that efforts had been made by the family to secure the area near the water with a fence.
The community, along with neighboring areas, has come together to support the grieving family during this difficult time. Garden Hill, located approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg, has been deeply affected by the heartbreaking incident. The authorities mentioned that there have been multiple drowning incidents in Manitoba in 2026, emphasizing the importance of water safety.
Sgt. Chris Hipolito of the Island Lake RCMP acknowledged the challenges of such incidents and expressed solidarity with the affected family and community. He assured that the RCMP would provide necessary assistance and support to help them cope with the loss and begin the healing process.
