Keir Starmer has highlighted the presence of various entities aiming to sow discord in the country following a series of arson attacks linked to Russia that targeted his family’s property. The Prime Minister has pledged to combat malevolent forces that seek to undermine democracy, emphasizing the need to address both internal and external factors fueling division.
During the G7 summit, Starmer expressed concern over actors within and outside the UK attempting to exploit divisions for their gain. He stressed the importance of unity in combating such threats and reiterated the impact of the arson attacks on his family, refraining from divulging specifics but acknowledging the emotional toll.
Two individuals, identified as Ukrainian Roman Lavrynovych, 22, and Romanian Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, were convicted of conspiring to damage property in connection to the incidents. Starmer noted the significance of his family receiving justice, underscoring the gravity of the attacks and the subsequent legal proceedings.
The Prime Minister also contextualized the arson attacks within the broader geopolitical landscape, particularly in light of Western support for Ukraine amid Russian aggression. Meanwhile, Downing Street announced 70 new sanctions against Russia at the G7 summit, demonstrating the UK’s firm stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Furthermore, the UK government disclosed imposing its largest-ever penalty for violating Russian financial sanctions since the 2022 Ukraine invasion, with a £1 million fine levied against technology company Sabre Global Technologies Limited (SGTL) for repeated breaches.
