Solo Hiker Flees Bear Encounter in German Alps

Must read

A hiker recently shared a harrowing experience of encountering a bear during a solo walk in the Chiemgau Alps of Germany, an area that hasn’t had a breeding bear population for over 175 years. The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted hearing a strange noise followed by a crow’s frantic squawk before spotting a brown bear standing upright about 200 meters away.

Reacting swiftly, she immediately ran from the scene without pausing to capture a photo, driven by a strong instinct to flee. Brown bears have been gradually reappearing in the Alps in recent times, primarily concentrated in the Central Alps in Italy near the borders with Austria and Slovenia. Some are believed to have migrated from the established Dinaric-Balkan population in the Balkans, estimated at around 4,000 bears.

Although encounters with bears in the Chiemgau Alps are uncommon, with no documented breeding population since 1835, the region has now witnessed such an event. Notably, in 2006, ‘Bruno the bear’ gained fame in Germany after wandering the Bavarian countryside for seven weeks, evading capture despite multiple attempts. Ultimately, authorities had to euthanize him near Zell in southern Germany due to public safety concerns.

While wild bear sightings are exceedingly rare in Britain, with the last recorded instance dating back to the 1430s in Scotland and the 1240s in England, other parts of the world face real threats from bear attacks, especially in areas where human settlements intersect with bear habitats. Just recently, a tragic incident in Bella Coola, Canada, saw a grizzly bear attacking a group of primary school children and teachers, resulting in 11 injuries and two individuals fighting for their lives.

Among the victims was Veronica Schooner’s 10-year-old son Alvarez, who was in the attacked class and even touched the bear’s fur. Reports indicated that a male teacher bravely intervened but sustained severe injuries, requiring ambulance transportation for medical care.
