A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling for hydrogen with the aim of demonstrating the feasibility of extracting it from underground sources on a commercial scale, rather than relying on fossil fuel production methods. Regina-based Max Power Mining recently initiated drilling at its third well within the Lawson Complex, a subterranean rock formation located in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, heralding a new era in primary energy sourcing.
Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial element in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy alternatives. Highlighting the need for a more sustainable sourcing method for hydrogen, Levesque underscored the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen reserves.
Hydrogen serves as a versatile gas that can be utilized as a fuel or converted into electricity through fuel cells, with water being the sole byproduct of its reaction with oxygen. This characteristic makes hydrogen an attractive energy source for reducing emissions in sectors like transportation and steel manufacturing. However, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is currently produced from fossil fuels, contributing significantly to carbon emissions.
In contrast, green hydrogen, generated through renewable energy sources and electrolysis of water, offers a cleaner production method but remains economically less competitive than grey hydrogen. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a potential solution as it can be harnessed from underground deposits with lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional production methods.
