“Rory McIlroy Prefers UK Retreat Over Canadian Open”

Must read

Rory McIlroy has decided to take a brief respite at his newly acquired residence in the UK before gearing up for the US Open. The world No. 2 recently participated in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, achieving a tie for 12th place.

Scoring four under par, the 37-year-old is preparing for the third major tournament of the year. However, McIlroy will not be participating in the Canadian Open this week as he opted to return to England.

After a 3,650-mile journey from Ohio to Wentworth, McIlroy is settling into his new home in Surrey. Following a six-day stay, he will embark on another approximately 3,500-mile trip to Southampton, New York, for the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

By choosing to spend time at his family home, McIlroy will miss the chance to compete in the Canadian Open, which boasts a prize pool of £7.3 million, with £1.3 million going to the event winner.

“I had a couple of weeks off and we got ourselves settled into our house in London for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days,” McIlroy mentioned before the Memorial Tournament.

The £9 million mansion, purchased in 2023, was already a luxurious property before McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll began renovating it. The six-bedroom mansion has been expanded and revamped as the couple, along with their daughter Poppy, relocate from Florida.

Previously residing in a lavish £16.5 million mansion in Jupiter, Florida, since 2017, McIlroy and Stoll’s new residence in the UK is now among other prominent figures like Elton John and Cliff Richard. Notably, their new neighbor, the Sultan of Brunei, has an impressive net worth of £22.3 billion.

Reflecting on his performance at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy acknowledged his struggles with driver inconsistency but remains optimistic about his prospects at the upcoming US Open.

As he focuses on clinching a second major title of the season at Shinnecock Hills, McIlroy aims to improve daily in preparation for the tournament.
