Philippine cinema icon dies from rabies after puppy lick

Must read

Beloved actor Fernando Poe Sr. tragically passed away after being licked by a rabid puppy on an open wound and declining treatment for the deadly disease. Poe, a renowned figure in the Philippine cinema’s golden era, excelled as an actor, director, and war hero during World War II.

In October 1951, Poe was hospitalized with severe hip pain, initially attributed to a playful pillow fight injury. Despite multiple treatments by specialists, his condition worsened rapidly, leading to breathing difficulties and muscle stiffness, particularly in the neck.

Dr. Eliodoro Congco, a family friend and clinic owner, inquired about Poe’s recent interactions with dogs when Poe’s wife revealed that he had allowed a puppy to lick his wound and rejected rabies treatment. Poe subsequently developed hydrophobia, an aversion to water characteristic of rabies victims, and succumbed to the disease on October 23, 1951, at the age of 35, sending shockwaves through the film industry.

Poe’s son, Fernando Poe Jr., later disclosed that his father underestimated the risk of rabies transmission from the puppy and believed it would aid in healing. This fatal misjudgment underscored the importance of prompt medical intervention for potential rabies exposure.

Rabies, a viral infection transmitted through the saliva of infected animals like dogs and bats, attacks the central nervous system and carries a near 100% fatality rate once symptoms manifest. Symptoms include anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, muscle spasms, and hydrophobia, making it one of the deadliest infectious diseases.

Before his untimely death, Poe Sr. had completed his final film, “Basag na Manika,” a poignant narrative about a leper’s ostracized child. His passing led to the postponement of the movie premiere, marking a poignant moment in Philippine cinema history.

Poe Sr.’s enduring legacy thrives through his cinematic works and his children, notably Fernando Poe Jr., who achieved national acclaim and ventured into politics, narrowly missing the opportunity to become the Philippine president.

In conclusion, Fernando Poe Sr.’s tragic demise serves as a cautionary tale about the grave consequences of underestimating rabies exposure and the critical importance of seeking immediate medical attention in such situations.
