Taking a firm stand against the £160 fine imposed on her for withdrawing her son from school for a family vacation, a mother, Thea Rule, expressed no remorse, stating that the savings of £1,280 on the trip outweighed any penalties.
The decision to take her five-year-old son, Roman, out of school and travel to Majorca for a week was made after the school denied her request for authorized absence. Thea firmly stated, “I am determined to take him out as he is in reception class, and we are going on that trip.” She emphasized the importance of family time and believed that the absence would not affect Roman’s learning.
Comparing costs, Thea highlighted that the same holiday during school breaks would have been significantly more expensive by £1,440 due to increased travel expenses. Despite receiving a fine from the school, the family managed to save £1,280 by traveling during the school term.
Emphasizing that the decision was based on the substantial difference in holiday prices, Thea shared that numerous parents supported her stance after she shared her story online. She stressed that the memories created with family during the trip were more valuable than worrying about fines.
While acknowledging the savings her family enjoyed, Thea cautioned that families should be aware of a lesser-known rule regarding term-time fines. She explained that fines are applied per parent per child and must be paid promptly. In England, the initial fine is £80 per person if settled within 21 days, increasing to £160 within 28 days.
Despite the potential fines, parents like Thea continue to opt for term-time vacations due to the considerable price hikes during school breaks, sometimes reaching triple the usual costs, including at UK holiday parks.
