The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event in Markham faced a setback at the starting line. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar race in Canada was canceled on Friday. This was due to incomplete track construction, preventing officials from conducting final safety checks. Organizers plan to accommodate the missed sessions on Saturday’s schedule.
Markham is hosting the event for the first time this year after relocating from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, its home since 1986. IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment over the track delay despite substantial support from their on-site team. He acknowledged the strong fan support in Ontario and apologized for the logistical challenges.
Longtime race attendees, Mark Coburn from Kitchener and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, shared mixed feelings about the delay. They emphasized the importance of safety but expressed disappointment over the lack of on-track action, a key attraction for fans.
IndyCar and the City of Markham announced the move from Toronto last September, with the track built for the first time this week. Some incomplete features included a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments. Despite initial skepticism about the location, fans gathered in Markham for the event.
Government investments totaling $5 million were announced to support the race, with additional funding from the city for infrastructure upgrades. Spectators enjoyed free admission on Fridays, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The hot weather and limited shade posed challenges for attendees accustomed to the amenities at Exhibition Place.
Off-track activities proceeded as planned on Friday, while Saturday’s schedule includes practice sessions and qualifying rounds. Boles expressed confidence in the track’s quality once it is ready for the main event on Sunday. Other racing events, including USF2000 Championship and NASCAR Canada Series, will also take place over the weekend.
Despite the challenges, fans and organizers are gearing up for an action-packed weekend of racing in Markham.
