Kelsey Mitchell’s impressive 29-point performance guided the Indiana Fever to a hard-fought 101-95 victory over the Toronto Tempo in a Tuesday matchup. Indiana, with a record of 25-13, secured their fifth consecutive win, led by the stellar play of Caitlin Clark, who contributed 24 points and seven assists. Fans at Scotiabank Arena showed their support by donning Clark’s jerseys.
Brittney Sykes made a notable return to the Tempo lineup, registering 15 points, five assists, and two rebounds after missing two months due to injury. Despite Marina Mabrey’s 22-point effort and Aneesah Morrow’s impressive double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds, Toronto suffered their 11th consecutive loss, setting a new franchise record.
Sykes’ absence due to a left plantar fascia injury had a significant impact on Toronto’s performance, as they endured a 10-game losing streak without her. The Tempo, once contenders for a playoff spot, now hold the third-worst record in the WNBA, trailing behind the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm, who have been eliminated from postseason contention.
In terms of gameplay, Indiana showcased their offensive prowess, living up to their status as the highest-scoring team in the league with 96.2 points per game. The Fever excelled in long-range shooting, hitting 11 of 25 three-point attempts and scoring 50 points in the paint. On the other hand, despite trailing throughout the game by as many as 17 points, Toronto displayed resilience, recording 22 second-chance points, outrebounding Indiana 41-32, and receiving strong contributions from their bench, which amassed 38 points compared to Indiana’s 20.
The game’s key moment came when Mabrey sank a three-pointer in the final seconds, cutting the deficit to four points, only for the shot to be nullified by a palming violation called by the referees. Toronto struggled offensively, converting 39.1% of their field-goal attempts and 32.4% from beyond the arc.
Looking ahead, the Indiana Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Toronto Tempo are set to take on the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
