A wealthy heiress was fatally shot at a high-end safari lodge in South Africa, just a day after a close friend and senior employee met a similar fate on the same private property.
Caroline von Rantzau, 26, sustained a gunshot wound at the Leeuwfontein hunting reserve owned by her affluent shipping family on June 1. Her tragic death followed the discovery of Arno Koën, 44, the estate’s financial manager, who was also found shot dead on the premises a day earlier.
Authorities are now investigating a potential connection between the two deaths, shifting attention to the vast Limpopo estate. Initially, incorrect reports from the family’s business indicated that von Rantzau had died in a car accident on June 1, but subsequent confirmation revealed that both fatalities were firearm-related.
Koën was discovered on May 31 with gunshot wounds from a 9mm pistol, and later, additional gunfire was reportedly heard elsewhere on the property. Von Rantzau was subsequently found with fatal injuries inflicted by a .357 caliber hunting rifle.
According to a witness cited in Bild, the firearm possibly originated from a gun cabinet owned by her father, Dr. Eberhart Rantzau. Law enforcement spent two days conducting searches on the estate, interviewing witnesses, and collecting forensic evidence across the expansive grounds. Despite ongoing investigations, no motive has been established, no arrests have been made, and further leads are being pursued.
The tragic events have deeply affected the von Rantzau family, prominent in Germany’s shipping industry. Von Rantzau was seen as a rising figure within the Hamburg-based business empire. Her father serves as the managing director of Deutsche Afrika-Linien GmbH, which divested its container shipping division to Hapag-Lloyd in 2022. Additionally, the family has investments in container infrastructure in South Africa.
Living in the country, von Rantzau had recently broadened her real estate holdings with two additional properties near the Mozambique border. Described by friends as dedicated to caring for animals on the estate and an enthusiastic hunter, she had a close relationship with Koën, who oversaw the lodge’s financial affairs and bookings, and was regarded by her as a “foster father” and “mentor,” according to Bild.
Malesela Ledwaba, a police spokesperson, highlighted the importance of post-mortem examinations in unraveling the full circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“The results of the autopsy will provide investigators with insights into the actual causes of death and determine if further investigations against other individuals are warranted,” he stated.
