In her childhood in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series set on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she would tune in to watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, particularly admiring Mag Ruffman’s portrayal of Aunt Olivia. When Czajka learned about a fan convention on P.E.I. featuring Ruffman, she didn’t hesitate to secure a ticket.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood version of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at attending the convention. Fans of the acclaimed Canadian series traveled from various corners of the globe to the Island for the sold-out event. “Road to Avonlea,” which aired in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.
The show, loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, centered on young Sarah Stanley (played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley) being sent to live with her deceased mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. The three-day convention featured activities such as oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew, and visits to filming locations and Montgomery-related sites on the Island.
Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, emphasized the enduring appeal of “Road to Avonlea,” noting that its themes of kindness, friendship, and community continue to resonate with audiences. Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, expressed gratitude for the fans’ enthusiasm and emotional connection to the show. Czajka shared her delight in rewatching the series with her children, underscoring the rarity of finding a show that can be enjoyed across generations.
