The family of a young American man manipulated into taking his own life during a video call has commended a British individual who helped uncover the truth. Dylan Phelan, a 21-year-old from Morley, West Yorkshire, was part of an online group that pressured Travis Dyer, also 21, to shoot himself in Louisiana in October 2024. Phelan confessed to his role in encouraging suicide, creating indecent materials, and possessing extreme pornography, resulting in a sentence of six years and four months in prison.
During the lead-up to the tragic incident, Dyer had etched Phelan’s name on his body and, on the fatal day, was egged on by Phelan via video call along with two others named Mads and Rob. Phelan repeatedly urged Dyer to commit the act and callously laughed when Dyer eventually did. Phelan even saved a recording of the suicide on his computer and later divulged the details to an acquaintance, leading to the involvement of the authorities.
The court proceedings revealed that Dyer’s family highlighted a woman’s brave actions in assisting them to uncover the truth, emphasizing the positive relationships Dyer had online. Additionally, it was disclosed that Phelan engaged in an online community on Discord where inappropriate content was discovered on his devices.
During sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, Mr. Justice Cotter described Phelan’s actions as stemming from morbid curiosity and a lack of regard for Dyer’s well-being. The court learned that Dyer had faced significant personal losses, adding to his struggles with mental health.
Dyer’s family mourned the loss of the young man, emphasizing his resilience and potential, which was tragically cut short. They condemned the group dynamics that led to Dyer’s demise and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to prevent similar incidents in the future.
