Lord Walker has called on government officials to exert pressure on the Football Association and kit manufacturers to lower prices, especially as replica England kits are being sold for nearly £90 in anticipation of the upcoming World Cup. Sports minister Baroness Twycross acknowledged concerns over affordability but stated that pricing decisions are ultimately left to manufacturers and football associations.
The issue was discussed in the House of Lords, where Lord Walker emphasized the challenges faced by families in affording official kits, leading many to opt for counterfeit alternatives. He urged the government to collaborate with the FA and major brands to establish clearer guidelines on supply chains and profit margins to address these issues.
Amidst the price discrepancies, England’s adult-sized shirts are priced at £89.99, while Scotland’s home shirt, marking their return to the World Cup after 28 years, is listed at £75. Additionally, criticism was directed at football clubs for excessive commercialization, with concerns raised about the multitude of kits adorned with sponsor logos, generating substantial revenue for the clubs.
