“23 Million Bank Holiday Car Journeys Expected Amid Warm Weather”

Must read

During the upcoming bank holiday weekend, an estimated 23 million car journeys are anticipated to take place. This surge in traffic is attributed to the combination of expected warm weather and the commencement of the half term break for numerous schools in England and Wales. Additionally, with the final round of Premier League matches scheduled for the weekend, motorists are advised to plan their journeys in advance.

The AA, a motoring group, projects that Friday will be the busiest day with approximately 23.4 million journeys, followed by 22.8 million on Saturday, and 22.4 million on both Sunday and bank holiday Monday. Most trips are likely to be local, with half of respondents in an AA poll planning daily excursions of up to 50 miles. Shopping ranks as the primary purpose for travel, cited by 40% of drivers, followed closely by visiting family or friends at 39%. Furthermore, 23% are planning trips to DIY stores or garden centers, while 22% anticipate traveling for work.

Separate research conducted by the RAC reveals that 28% of drivers are increasingly concerned about rising fuel costs. The average petrol price across the UK is currently at 158.52p, the highest since December 2022, while diesel stands at 185.92p. This translates to £87 to fill up a family car with unleaded, an increase of £14 compared to last year, and over £102 for diesel, marking a £26 rise from the previous year.

Lee Morley, an AA expert patrol, emphasized the impact of favorable weather on travel decisions during the holiday weekend. He advised drivers to anticipate heavy traffic on popular routes due to the spontaneous nature of plans prompted by good weather conditions. Morley also highlighted the potential congestion on Sunday, influenced by the final round of Premier League matches, which could lead to increased traffic around stadiums, city centers, and major routes. He recommended checking traffic updates before departure and conducting basic vehicle checks using the mnemonic FLOWER (Fuel, Lights, Oil, Water, Electrics, and Rubber) to prevent breakdowns.

Given the financial strain of fuel prices, Morley suggested cost-saving measures such as comparing fuel prices before filling up, reducing unnecessary weight, maintaining proper tire pressure, and driving smoothly. He also encouraged drivers to utilize the AA App to locate cheaper fuel options along their route, ensuring they avoid overpaying while traveling.
