A man encountered an alligator after purportedly diving into a wetland to evade law enforcement authorities. Victor M. Rivas was apprehended following an extensive search operation that utilized drone technology to pinpoint his location in the marshy area.
Video footage from a body camera captured the moment when the 40-year-old was attacked by the alligator while swimming in the water. Louisiana State Police had received reports of a Toyota Supra being driven recklessly in Jefferson Parish, leading to a pursuit by officers after the vehicle collided with a concrete barrier and experienced a tire blowout.
Rivas was stopped by state troopers after they identified the damaged vehicle traveling on Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish. During questioning, Rivas reportedly fled on foot and jumped into a swamp beneath the interstate. Despite being briefly seen walking along US Highway 61, he re-entered the swamp as officers approached.
While navigating the marsh, Rivas fell victim to the alligator, suffering injuries to both arms. Despite his wounds, he persistently tried to escape until drones located him, leading to his transfer to a local hospital for medical attention.
Upon release from medical care, Rivas faced charges of second-offense DWI and resisting an officer. Additional warrants were issued for hit-and-run and careless driving linked to the Jefferson Parish crash. Louisiana State Police emphasized the serious and unpredictable consequences of impaired driving and urged motorists to make responsible decisions by planning ahead and designating a sober driver. The cooperation between Louisiana State Police and the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office was instrumental in resolving the incident successfully.
