“Coyote Sightings Spark Concern in Regina Parks”

Must read

Numerous residents in Regina have reported seeing coyotes frequenting local parks, sparking concerns within the community. Scott Paton, who frequents Les Sherman Park with his dogs, shared his encounter with a coyote in mid-August, mentioning that the animal seemed more curious than aggressive. Despite the sightings, Paton remains unperturbed, stating that coyotes are now part of the urban habitat and will likely move on naturally.

However, not all residents share the same level of comfort. Multiple reports on Facebook have detailed encounters with a coyote in and around Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August. Some individuals described being followed or chased by the animal, noting its seeming comfort around humans and pets.

City Counsellor David Froh recently had a close encounter with a coyote while out for a morning run in Les Sherman Park. Froh emphasized the need for a response to persistent sightings, highlighting the importance of public safety. The City of Regina has acknowledged receiving reports of two coyotes in the area and is collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the animals.

Froh reassured residents that the removal process is conducted with community and animal safety in mind, involving tranquilization rather than firearms. He urged the public to report any sightings of coyotes or other wildlife that may pose safety risks. Froh emphasized the need to coexist with nature in urban settings, prioritizing the safety of both pets and wildlife.

In parallel, the film “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently screening in various Regina theaters, offering a fictional take on coyote encounters while underscoring the importance of reporting real-life wildlife sightings to local authorities.
