A man known as the Connecticut Cannibal brutally killed a homeless man named Angel Gonzalez in 2011 by using a hatchet and consuming parts of his brain and eyeball. Tyree Smith, the perpetrator, then shared details of the gruesome act with his cousin, including how he described the taste of the victim’s eye as similar to an oyster. Smith, who was deemed not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, was confined to Whiting Forensic Hospital for 60 years in 2013. Recently, he was granted conditional release after a psychiatrist attested that his mental illnesses were under control due to medication and treatment.
Smith, now living in a supervised community setting, has been commended for his positive impact on others and his adherence to treatment. Despite this, reports from the Connecticut Department of Correction revealed instances of altercations with fellow inmates during his time in prison. Gonzalez’s sister-in-law expressed concerns about Smith’s release, believing he remains a danger to society. In court, Smith apologized for his actions, attributing them to his mental state at the time. His apology was met with mixed emotions, with Gonzalez’s sister-in-law expressing surprise at his remorseful words.
