The sanctioned officials from the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been engaged in activities that have endangered a crucial international waterway, according to a press release from Global Affairs Canada. The designated individuals are Ali Abdollahi, the commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters and a senior IRGC figure; Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, a spokesperson for Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters; Ebrahim Azizi, a parliamentarian and head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee; Shahram Irani, the commander of Artesh, the Iranian navy; and Hamid Hosseini, the chair of the board of directors and spokesperson for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union.
The latest sanctions are a response to mounting pressure to resolve the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran as efforts to finalize a peace agreement have faced obstacles. Since the commencement of the conflict in February following a joint U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has vacillated between threats of escalation and assertions of an imminent peace deal. Trump has called upon allies to assist in safeguarding the crucial oil shipping route, with Canada joining other nations in urging Iran to cease its actions blocking the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping. Amid strained relationships with some allies due to the conflict, Trump has expressed frustration over the situation. Despite claims of military success against Iran, disruptions to shipping persist, prompting considerations of a continuous U.S. naval presence in the region to enforce the blockade.
